Environmental Champ Brownley places in "Clean House Challenge"

Congratulations to California Congressional candidate Julia Brownley, one of three winners in the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund's "Clean House Challenge."

Pro-environment candidates Patrick Murphy (running in Florida) and Tammy Duckworth (running in Illinois) were also successful in the national contest, decided by popular vote, to determine which of ten worthy candidates would receive funds toward their campaigns for Congress.

CLCV and the LCV Action Fund have both endorsed Julia Brownley, currently a member of the California state Assembly, for election to the U.S. House of Representatives representing California’s 26th district. Brownley was successful in the recent California primary election and will move forward in the race for CD 26, to be decided in November's General Election.

As an Assemblymember, Brownley fought for legislation to eliminate single-use, carryout plastic bags, sparking a statewide grassroots movement to ban the bags. (The bill has returned to the state legislature again this year and CLCV will work hard along with our allies in the environmental community to pass this important law to reduce the use of plastic bags.)

In 2009 Brownley successfully won approval for setting standards to clean toxic and radioactive waste from the Santa Susana Field Laboratory. She has earned a stellar 99% lifetime score for her votes on environmental legislation in CLCV’s California Environmental Scorecard. 

Brownley's opponent, state Senator Tony Strickland, has scored an abysmal 7% lifetime score on the Scorecard despite his hollow claims that he is an environmentalist. Recently Strickland introduced legislation that was a direct attack on Brownley's leadership (not to mention local and state government's efforts) to reduce pollution from plastic bags.

Brownley is a proven champion for California’s environment, and if elected to Congress she’ll stand up to corporate polluters and work to build a clean energy future for the Golden State and the nation.
